....I'm happy to report that a friend from KL, Monica and her family had a very nice month's summer vacation here in Sanya, very much enjoying hanging around the great beach here at Dadonghai and enjoying lots of cool local places...
Monica's favorite memory from her stay is undoubtedly tied to her recommendation to NEVER go to what is called the Sanya Zoo....in fact, I didn't even know Sanya had a "zoo" until Monica brought it up to warn us to stay away....frankly, it was kind of hilarious hearing her describe the place that offered "100rmb to get in ...i think there were 5 animals and the diving pigs show...the pigs go up and dive off into the water two times, the whole thing took less than 5 minutes...and that's it, that's the show!!"...OINK OINK!! Cheers, M

Ok, fair enough, its not just Sanya...inflation is a rampant wildfire raging throughout China much the same as it did in the U.S. post war boom years. Meanwhile, many of us are so happy to have certain imported goods considered "essentials"... my Italian-biased kitchen can't survive without...
CONGRATULATIONS TO CHINA FOR BRINGING THE WORLD A SPECTACULAR AND MOVING OPENING CEREMONY
...we're lucky in many ways. When we called my folks in Scottsdale this morning, they were just starting to watch the 29th Olympics Opening Ceremony, while last night we lucky ones enjoyed a great night out at Rainbow II on the Sanya river watching the program.
Extraordinary...Spectacular...we the veteran expats living in China for 5-10 years have reason to feel good about where we live. The Olympic Games will be packed with people in the coming 16 days and yet Beijing kept security and safety a top priority, inconvenient? Certainly, but in fact, a point which should be deeply appreciated by all of us. The way that external news media reports on these the 29th Olympic Games with such a negative and manipulative bias gives those of us who have been living here for many years reason to shake our heads and be sad, knowing the unprecedented and broad degree to which China has improved during the past 10 years, making itself a country well worthy to host the games.
If you feel like venturing out and off your comfy couch, lots of folks here in Sanya will be enjoying the games for the next 16 days on the big screens at Kempinski's Paulaner, Rainbow Cafe I & II, along with many of the major hotel lounges and bars.
Cheers, M

...oh you'll love this one boys and girls:
We've all come to understand that the capital gain tax applies for five years, then you don't have to pay it. That's the tax of 20% to 40% of your profit depending on how much profit you have when you sell your property.
Ahh yes, when does the five year period START? From the date on your legal apt. TITLE. That's the TITLe you pay the 3% for. I paid my 3% for my TITLE when I bought the apartment, so then of course that is the START date on the TITLE for the 5 years, RIGHT?
WRONG.....
...head along Sanya He Xi Lu to the walking bridge area and turn left on He Ping Jie...just on the right you'll find a local family run Xin Jiang restaurant with a couple of steps up onto the front porch and into the restaurant. They bake the classic fresh Xin Jiang flat breads, and serve tasty well-prepared Xin Jiang dishes at low local prices...Enjoy! Cheers, M

....Its wonderful to see Ya Long Bay's diverse offering of resorts continue to expand with the opening of the new Ritz Carlton and Pullman Resorts...
Located in the same area as the neighboring Hilton and Marriot, the Ritz Carlton is yet another massive 450+ room grand dame offering the brand's expected style of refinement, elegance and service while serving it up beachside...the resort feels spacious and open, with a nice variety of top notch restaurant and cafe offerings of course including topscale Italian...beachside, there are many more luxury villas available compared to other resorts in Yalong Bay...Ritz Carlton's reputation is world-renowned and I'm sure this new resort will continue that tradition...
The new Pullman resort feels nice and warm, with a way of instantly putting you in a good mood, featuring a more intimate boutique style with large private villas that truly make you feel as you've escaped the world...Laurent Martin, the resort Director of Food & Beverage was kind enough to take us for a tour recently and it's easy to be impressed and forget this resort's location off the beachfront, which is a short walk away similar to the Crowne Plaza...the restaurant offerings feature a lovely upscale Chinese style restaurant while the 2nd floor features an Indian restaurant.

...Answer: the Shang Pin Jie neighborhood located downtown between the two rivers, along Ling Chun Lu, which is the lovely scenic road that runs along the first riverside with views of the Sanya park area developed along YuYa Lu from the first bridge over to the Miss World Beauty Center and Library...
...the Shang Pin Jie neighborhood is a cool local neighborhood, with Guang Xin Jie and Shang Pin Jie being the "major" intersection and which has just finished up major street expansion and improvements. Along Shang Pin Jie from 6 to 8pm its busy and with good reason..its a street lined with local restaurants, many of which are quite nice and most of which offer Chongqing hotpot and Sichuan food...the one we ate at the other night didn't miss a beat...amazing Sichuan food, low prices, nice atmosphere and 6rmb for big cold bottles of Anchor Red Crown...Cheers, M

Once again, understanding the continuing development of Hainan's eastern coastline from Sanya in the south up to Boao on the northeast coastline, here's another China Hospitality News article indicating clearcut plans for a major development at Ling Shui, about 60km north east of Sanya.
Update on the Lui Hui Tou area...took a ride over the hill the other day to find more dust and dirt flying around than a dry desert storm...Ban Shan Ban Dao continues it's far-reaching expansion and if you didn't know it, Banyan Tree is open for business
..the road heading west past Peninsula Dragon Bay is completely torn up, unpassable by car, will probably be that way for another week or two, we'll see...Cheers, M

Sanya Hainan Island is now the world's tropical hot spot, a fast-rising tropical destination for tourism and the MICE industry (meetings and conferences). The list of Sanya hotels and resorts reveals all the intn'l 5 star hotel brands already here or coming soon. In December 2003, I fulfilled one of my life's dreams when I purchased a Sanya beach front apartment here. Sanya ocean front property is expensive now whether at Da Dong Hai or Sanya Bay or Yalong Bay. Hainan Island offers all the tropical beauty of other southeast asian islands. Based in Shanghai since 2000, my corporate work as an event emcee and professional speaker, and my training & coaching business have me traveling frequently in the APAC region, so my business and lifestyle go hand in hand. This site is an excellent resource for Sanya information and will keep you informed about Sanya business developments, Sanya restaurants, Sanya hotels and inside tips on local life here in the growing Sanya expat community.
