I find it an interesting coincidence that public proclamations by the Chinese government are occurring JUST before the Chinese New Year to make Hainan Island an "international" destination, feeding the frenzy of rising property prices down here. Such PR proclamations have been heard before and are nothing new. However, at this time, we can see clear evidence that the real estate and resort development efforts are decidedly more to the upscale and luxury market including the world's most famous luxury hotel brand names and world-class golf resorts.

Its no secret that during the past year, incoming tourists to Sanya from Russia, Korea and Japan has dropped off substantially while domestic mainland tourists number have continued to rise. Wait a minute, that probably is not common knowledge now that I think about it. I have always maintained that the primary directive for Sanya's development is for the domestic mainland market, however that does not mean I am saying ZERO effort will be made to open up...

It is interesting to note this March 14th headline on the Xinhua newswire, which reminds me that a big part of Sanya's continued expansion needs to include an increase in direct access...

Ahh did they just need to have a little excitement to break their daily boredom? According to this article on the newswire several Chinese vessels surrounded and harassed a U.S. Navy patrol ship conducting "routine" operations.

This incident occurred yesterday about 75 miles south of Hainan Island....

"The Chinese vessels "shadowed and aggressively maneuvered in dangerously close proximity" to the USNS Impeccable on Sunday, with one vessel coming within 25 feet of the U.S. ship,..."

Maybe they didn't appreciate Obama accusing the Chinese of manipulating their currency or the U.S. financial game leading the entire planet into an economic meltdown? Cheers, M
